THE LEGAL AID ACT, 2021
This Act aims to provide a comprehensive legal framework for granting legal aid in civil and criminal cases to individuals who cannot afford legal services. It establishes the Legal Aid Board as the central authority for coordinating and regulating legal aid provision, including through legal practitioners, legal assistants, paralegals, and legal aid service providers. The Act also governs the registration, qualifications, and scope of practice of these actors, continues the Legal Aid Fund, and introduces mechanisms for funding, administration, alternative dispute resolution, and oversight, while repealing and replacing the Legal Aid Act of 1967​. The Act is structured as follows:
