Abstract/Citation
Consolidates the law relating to factories and the safety, health, and welfare of persons employed in them. Part One establishes definitions for use in the Act including the definition of 'factory.'. Part Two sets out general provisions for the application of the Act, including how it is to be applied during public emergencies. Part Three provides for general safety. This includes inter alia, requirements for the fencing of machinery, safety standards for transmission machinery, the training and supervision of persons, the fencing of places containing dangerous substances, precautions with respect to explosive or flammable dust, vapour or gas and the safety provisions of steam boilers. This Section also includes fire safety provisions and procedures for Chief Fire Officer examinations. Part Four establishes general environmental provisions concerning cleanliness, precautions for waste disposal, sanitation, lighting, ventilation and precautions against overcrowding. Part Five establishes general welfare for employees including rules on drinking water supply, rest rooms and first aid. Part Six deals with the working environment. Regulates the removal of gas, dust and fumes, the use of protective equipment and the employment of persons in processes involving lead compounds. Part Seven prohibits the importation and sale of articles made with prohibited materials and gives inspectors the power to take samples of factory materials if he suspects that there has been a contravention of regulations. Part Eight provides for the medical examination of young persons in determining their fitness for employment. Part Nine concerns special applications and extensions of the Act. Part Ten provides for notices, returns, records and the duties of persons employed. Part Eleven deals with general administration, Part Twelve with safety organisation and Part Thirteen with special regulations and rules. Part Fourteen regulates proceedings concerning offences, provisions on evidence and prosecutions as well as sets out the penalties for such offences.
